Job Description: Industrial API Inspector


Position Summary

The Industrial API Inspector is responsible for performing inspections of equipment, materials, and processes to ensure compliance with American Petroleum Institute (API) standards, industry codes, and regulatory requirements. This role supports safety, reliability, and quality assurance within industrial environments such as refineries, petrochemical plants, pipelines, and fabrication facilities.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections in accordance with applicable API standards (e.g., API 510, 570, 653, etc.)
  • Perform visual inspections, non-destructive testing (NDT) oversight, and thickness measurements
  • Evaluate integrity of pressure vessels, piping systems, storage tanks, and related equipment
  • Review inspection data, reports, and maintenance records for compliance and accuracy
  • Identify defects, corrosion, mechanical damage, or other conditions that may impact equipment safety and performance
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports with findings, recommendations, and corrective actions
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, client, and site-specific safety protocols
  • Coordinate with engineers, maintenance teams, and operations personnel to resolve inspection issues
  • Witness and verify repair, alteration, and testing activities
  • Maintain up-to-date certifications and knowledge of API codes and industry best practices

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED (Associate’s or technical degree preferred)
  • Current API certification(s) such as:
    • API 510 (Pressure Vessel Inspector)
    • API 570 (Piping Inspector)
    • API 653 (Tank Inspector)
  • Relevant experience in inspection, maintenance, or construction within oil & gas, petrochemical, or industrial sectors
  • Strong understanding of industry codes and standards (API, ASME, ASTM, etc.)
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, and technical documents
  • Knowledge of corrosion mechanisms and inspection techniques
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • NDT certifications (e.g., UT, RT, MT, PT)
  • Experience with RBI (Risk-Based Inspection) methodologies
  • Familiarity with inspection software and digital reporting tools
  • TWIC card or ability to obtain one
  • OSHA safety certifications

Work Environment

  • Industrial settings including refineries, chemical plants, and construction sites
  • May involve working at heights, in confined spaces, and in varying weather conditions
  • Requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Travel may be required depending on project or site assignments

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, and bend for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Comfortable working in physically demanding and potentially hazardous environments
