Job Summary
We are a heavy highway asphalt paving contractor serving Northern Illinois and the Chicagoland area seeking an experienced Asphalt Quality Control (QC) Technician.
The QC Technician will perform daily asphalt testing at our asphalt plants and jobsites and work closely with plant, field, and agency personnel to ensure materials meet federal, state, and customer specifications.
This position is ideal for someone with asphalt QC experience who is dependable, detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and comfortable working in both laboratory and field environments.
Responsibilities
- Perform asphalt testing and analysis at asphalt plants and jobsites
- Perform volumetric testing for multiple asphalt mixes used throughout daily production
- Perform nuclear gauge testing on asphalt pavements
- Extract field core samples and prepare and test samples in the laboratory
- Deliver samples to appropriate agencies
- Communicate effectively with agency representatives, plant personnel, and field crews
- Complete and submit daily production reports using appropriate software and/or diary records
- Perform routine service, repair, and calibration of laboratory and field-testing equipment
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional laboratory
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Minimum 2 years of experience in an asphalt quality control role
- Experience using asphalt laboratory and field-testing equipment
- Knowledge of the asphalt paving process
- Strong mathematical skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Detail-oriented, organized, self-motivated, and dependable
- Ability to prioritize workload and perform effectively under pressure
- Strong attendance and reliability
- Ability to work effectively with plant, field, and agency personnel
- Willingness to join the applicable trade union as required for the position
- Illinois DOT Aggregate Technician Certificate, HMA Level 1 and/or HMA Level 2 certification preferred, or ability to obtain required certification within 3 months
- Must be available to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, based on production and customer needs

Working Conditions
This position includes work in both a climate-controlled, standalone laboratory and outdoor jobsites. Field work may be performed in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to perform prolonged sitting, standing, reaching, and lifting
