Purpose:

The Emergency Medical Services (EMS)/Pediatric Quality Coordinator is a registered nurse who serves as a liaison between the hospital, EMS workers and other providers of emergency services to ensure high quality, effective and efficient pre-hospital patient care. This includes education, quality assurance/improvement and disciplinary responsibilities. This also includes a twenty-four-hour accountability to resolve EMS issues. This role also works collaborates with the Unit Manager and other Patient Care Coordinators (PCCs) on the daily operations of the Emergency Department. Responsibilities include providing administrative and clinical leadership related to EMS. Presents self as a dedicated healthcare professional, patient advocate, mentor, and leader, providing training and orientation related to EMS and Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP) to new registered nurse employees.

This role also works with the Unit Manager, Emergency Department (ED) Director, and ED Medical Director to ensure compliance with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Program. Responsibilities include continuous quality improvement initiatives related to pediatric care and oversight of pediatric continuing education of ED nurses and technicians. Additional Continuous Quality Improvement plans include, but are not limited to interfacility transfer, including role and responsibilities of the referring hospital and referral center; the process for selecting the appropriate care facility; selection of the appropriate transport service with acuity level, informed consent.

Key Job Activities:

Oversight of Emergency Communications Physicians (ECP)/Emergency Communications Registered Nurses (ECRN) and paramedics in patient care delivery in the pre-hospital setting.
Reviews patient care given by ECP/ECRNs and paramedics. Participates In ED Trauma/Medical and Pediatric Quality Improvement (QI), attends related EMS/department committee meetings.
Validates that care provided to patients is consistent with identified medical regimes such as critical pathways and standing medical orders.
Facilitates and supports EMS research and ensures that current research findings, which have been incorporated into clinical practices, are carried out at all levels.
Develops unit-based Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) programs and supports Mount Sinai Hospital’s (MSH) CQI, EMS CQI, and citywide EMC CQI policies.

Education and Work Experience:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
Minimum five years of emergency nursing experience

Knowledge and Skills:

Experience Preferred in EPIC and MEDITECH software systems

Certifications/Licenses:

Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the state of Illinois.
Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider and Instructor required.
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Provider and Instructor required.
Emergency Communications Registered Nurse (ECRN) in Chicago Region XI required.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider required.
Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) Provider preferred.
Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) Provider preferred.
Trauma Nurse Specialist (TNS) required.
