Position Overview:
The Senior Manager, Chromatography will lead and manage all activities of the Chromatography Department, which includes the Gas Chromatography (GC), Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Liquid Chromatography (LC), Liquid Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), and Metals analysis teams. This role ensures high-quality, timely, and compliant analytical testing of diverse categories of nicotine and aerosolized products.
As a scientific and technical leader, the Senior Manager will oversee multiple complex programs, apply advanced methodologies and drive innovative solutions that align with client expectations and industry standards. The role includes direct involvement in technical project execution, strategic planning, and leading technical discussions with client when required.
The Senior Manager, Chromatography will evaluate design and optimize departmental processes to ensure operational efficiency and scientific rigor. This role will support cross-functional problem-solving efforts to make informed decisions and establish methods and procedures for new initiatives. The Senior Manager will also coordinate the activities of assigned staff to ensure alignment with departmental goals and project timelines. This position reports directly to the Senior Director, Lab Operations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Manager, Chromatography at McKinney Specialty Labs will play a critical leadership role in guiding a high-performing scientific team and driving excellence in analytical testing. Primary responsibilities will include:
Lead Departmental Operations
Oversee all aspects of the Chromatography Department, including Gas Chromatography (GC), GC-MS, Liquid Chromatography (LC), LC-MS, and Metals analysis. Ensure timely, high-quality, and compliant testing of nicotine and aerosolized products.
Manage Multi-Program Execution
Coordinate and oversee multiple concurrent programs, aligning internal capabilities with evolving client needs and regulatory expectations.
Mentor and Develop Talent
Supervise, coach, and support professional development for team members, fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence.
Drive Innovation and Continuous Improvement
Evaluate current workflows and implement enhancements to improve operational efficiency, analytical quality, and scientific impact.
Solve Complex Challenges
Tackle technical and operational challenges through innovative thinking and data-driven decision-making.
Ensure Regulatory and Quality Compliance
Maintain adherence to ISO, GLP and other regulatory standards, ensuring robust documentation and audit readiness.
Collaborate Across Teams
Work cross-functionally with Quality Assurance, Business Development and other departments to ensure seamless project delivery.
Maintain Accurate Documentation
Ensure scientific methods, results, and departmental performance are documented clearly and thoroughly to support internal reporting and external audits.
Qualifications:
To be successful in this role, candidates must possess a strong foundation in analytical science, leadership experience, and a results-driven mindset. Reasonable accommodations will be provided to individuals with disabilities to ensure they can fulfill all core responsibilities.
Master’s or Ph.D. in chemistry or closely related scientific discipline and 5+ years of progressive experience in analytical testing laboratories, including 3+ years in a leadership or management role.
Extensive technical expertise in GC-MS, LC-MS, GC, LC, and metals analysis.
Proficient in analytical method development and validation, especially within regulated environments.
Proven experience in GLP, ISO-accredited, or similarly regulated laboratory settings.
Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing scientific teams, manage daily lab operations, and conduct performance reviews.
Skilled in multi-project coordination and capable of balancing shifting priorities and deadlines.
Strong organizational and communication abilities with a talent for clearly conveying priorities and expectations to staff.
Capable of managing departmental workflows, including project timelines, instrument scheduling, and assay logistics.
Preferred Skills:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Experience with conflict resolution and fostering a collaborative team environment.
Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities to drive problem diagnosis and corrective action.
Adept at multitasking and maintaining composure in high-pressure scenarios.
A proactive leader who promotes operational, functional, and technical excellence.
Committed to cultivating a culture of innovation, transparency, and cross-functional collaboration.
Familiarity with Mass Hunter, Mass Lynx, Chromeleon, and Empower.
