Role Summary:

The Sr. Data Scientist, Plant Quality Systems will play a critical role in enhancing vehicle quality and manufacturing efficiency by leveraging advanced analytics, machine learning, and statistical modeling. This individual will work closely with manufacturing, engineering, and quality teams to identify root causes of quality issues, predict potential defects, and optimize production processes. The ideal candidate will be a proactive problem-solver with a strong background in data science and a deep understanding of manufacturing environments. This role is located in Normal, IL and will report to the Manager, Plant Quality Systems and Data Engineering

Responsibilities:

Design, develop, and implement advanced statistical models, machine learning algorithms, and predictive analytics solutions to identify, predict, and prevent quality defects in the manufacturing process.

Analyze large, complex datasets from various plant systems (e.g., manufacturing execution systems, quality control systems, sensor data, supplier data, warranty data) to uncover insights and trends.

Develop and maintain robust data pipelines and data processing frameworks to ensure data quality and accessibility for analysis.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., manufacturing engineers, quality engineers, production supervisors) to perform deep-dive root cause analysis on critical quality issues.

Utilize data-driven insights to recommend and implement corrective and preventive actions, driving tangible improvements in product quality and reducing scrap/rework.

Develop dashboards and visualizations to monitor key quality metrics and communicate findings to stakeholders at all levels.

Build predictive models to forecast potential quality issues based on process parameters, material characteristics, and operational data.

Identify opportunities for process optimization and automation through data analysis, leading to improved efficiency and reduced variability.

Evaluate the effectiveness of implemented solutions and refine models based on real-world performance.

Stay abreast of the latest advancements in data science, machine learning, and manufacturing analytics.

Propose and experiment with new methodologies and technologies to enhance quality analysis and predictive capabilities.

Mentor junior data scientists and contribute to building a data-driven culture within the plant quality organization.

Clearly articulate complex analytical findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Build strong relationships with stakeholders across different departments to ensure alignment and successful project execution.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field. Ph.D. is a plus.

Experience: 5+ years of experience in a data scientist role, with a strong preference for experience in manufacturing, automotive, or a similarly complex industrial environment.

Proficiency in programming languages such as Python (Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow/Keras, PyTorch) and/or R.

Strong expertise in statistical modeling, hypothesis testing, regression analysis, time series analysis, and experimental design (DOE).

Extensive experience with machine learning algorithms (e.g., classification, clustering, anomaly detection, deep learning).

Proficiency in SQL for data extraction and manipulation.

Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Qlik Sense).

Familiarity with big data technologies (e.g., Spark, Hadoop) is a plus.

Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) for data science workflows is a plus.

Understanding of manufacturing processes, quality control methodologies (e.g., Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, SPC), and automotive industry standards (e.g., IATF 16949) is highly desirable.

Experience with sensor data analysis and IoT applications in a manufacturing context is a strong advantage.

Pay Disclosure:
Salary Range/Hourly Rate for Illinois Based Applicants: $123,100 – $154,000 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
