Overview

Responsible for overseeing and maintaining the Food Safety, Quality Assurance (FSQA), Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS), and regulatory compliance programs within the malthouse. Ensures all malt products meet regulatory, customer, and company standards for food safety and quality while fostering a strong safety culture and safe work environment for employees, contractors, and visitors.

Responsibilities

  • Food Safety & Quality Assurance
    • Maintain and continuously improve the site’s Food Safety Management System (FSMS).
    • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, CFIA) and industry standards (GFSI schemes, GMPs).
    • Manage document control, SOPs, HACCP plans, and food safety records.
    • Oversee product traceability, mock recalls, and recall procedures.
    • Monitor and verify quality parameters throughout the malting process (steeping, germination, kilning, cleaning, and storage).
    • Ensure raw barley intake inspections and finished malt testing meet established specifications.
    • Review laboratory analyses (moisture, protein, extract, germination rate, friability, etc.) and investigate deviations.
    • Generate and approve Certificates of Analysis (CoAs).
    • Manage non-conformance reports, root‑cause analysis, and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA).
    • Conduct routine plant inspections, environmental monitoring, and sanitation verification.
    • Provide food safety and quality training to employees.
    • Address customer quality inquiries and complaints, including investigations and response documentation.
    • Support customer audits, regulatory inspections, and third‑party audits.
    • Assist with technical documentation and product specifications.
    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product consistency and process capability.
  • Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS)
    • Support compliance with applicable provincial occupational health & safety legislation.
    • Ensure adherence to federal requirements where applicable.
    • Maintain compliance with WHMIS
      2015, including proper labeling and SDS management.
    • Support hazardous materials management in accordance with TDG regulations.
    • Assist with environmental compliance under ECCC and provincial agencies.
    • Conduct routine workplace inspections, hazard assessments, and safety audits.
    • Participate in or support the Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC).
    • Track and verify completion of corrective actions.
    • Coordinate safety training, including WHMIS
      2015, emergency response, and workplace violence & harassment.
    • Conduct new‑hire safety orientations and refresher training.
    • Prepare toolbox talks, safety alerts, and internal safety communications.
  • Incident & Environmental Management
    • Participate in incident and near‑miss investigations.
    • Conduct root‑cause analysis and ensure timely corrective action implementation.
    • Maintain injury and incident documentation and support provincial WCB/WSIB reporting requirements.
    • Assist in waste management, spill response, environmental monitoring, and sustainability initiatives.
    • Maintain environmental records and support regulatory reporting.
  • Education & Skills

    • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Agricultural Science, Brewing & Distilling Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or related field (preferred).
    • 2–5 years of experience in food safety, quality assurance, and/or EHS within a food or industrial manufacturing environment (grain handling, malting, brewing, or milling preferred).
    • Experience leading or supporting third‑party, regulatory, or customer audits.
    • Familiarity with GFSI, HACCP, Canadian OHS legislation, and WHMIS
      2015 required.
    • Certifications considered an asset: HACCP, PCQI, JHSC Certification, First Aid, TDG, COR Internal Auditor, CRSP, CHSC, or NCSO.
    • Strong understanding of malting processes and grain quality parameters considered an asset.
    • Knowledge of food safety standards, GMPs, sanitation programs, and GFSI‑recognized schemes.
    • Ability to conduct hazard assessments, job safety analyses (JSAs), and incident investigations.
    • Experience with laboratory testing and quality data analysis.
