Team Lead – Engineering
Location – Cape Town (3 days p/w in office, flexible hours)
Our ultra-ambitious, advanced African payments orchestration platform is searching for an Engineering Lead to guide, mentor, and empower a team of software engineers while driving the successful delivery of high-quality software solutions. This is a multifaceted role that blends hands-on software engineering, people management, and strong cross-functional collaboration. You’ll champion best practices, support the growth of your team, and ensure engineering efforts align with broader business goals.

Responsibilities
- Hands on software engineering
- Provide hands-on technical guidance and uphold excellence in software development
- Stay current with emerging technologies and incorporate them into team strategy
- Establish and enforce coding standards, code reviews, and automated testing practices
- Drive technical quality, address technical debt, and maintain a clean, scalable codebase
- Champions a culture of high-quality code contributions and rigorous quality assurance processes
- Establishes and enforces coding standards, code reviews, and automated testing frameworks to ensure the delivery of reliable, maintainable, and defect-free software
- Set clear team goals, manage workloads, and support a collaborative, inclusive culture
- Plan, lead, and deliver engineering projects on time and within budget
- Conduct bi-annual performance reviews and foster a culture of regular feedback.
- Continuously refine engineering processes, tools, and workflows to improve efficiency and product quality
- Participate in interviewing, evaluating technical exercises, and onboarding new engineers
- Help build a cohesive, high-performing engineering team through open communication and supportive leadership
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or STEM subject ideally from a top-tier university
- Strong software development skills with proven experience leading software engineers
- Excellent understanding of software development methodologies and lifecycle
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills
- A demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and support long-term career growth
- Comfortable working closely with Engineering Managers, Staff Engineers, and Product Managers
- Strong project management capabilities and ability to produce high-quality technical documentation
- Empathetic leadership style with a people-first approach
