Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced freelance copyeditor to support our peer-reviewed scientific pharmacy publication. The copyeditor will review unsolicited manuscripts for grammar, clarity, consistency, and adherence to the association’s style guide and publication formatting. This role requires strong attention to detail, familiarity with scientific or medical writing, and the ability to meet quick turnaround deadlines while collaborating with the editorial team. In this role we are looking for an individual to edit manuscripts with tracked changes and share concise editorial queries when clarification from authors may be required.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and edit unsolicited manuscripts and tables for grammar, punctuation, clarity, and adherence to the publication’s style guide.
- Ensure manuscripts maintain a clear, professional, and consistent scientific tone appropriate for a peer-reviewed pharmacy audience.
- Return edited manuscripts to the managing editor within 2–5 days of receipt.
- Suggest title revisions where appropriate and include running titles when needed.
- Edit and condense abstracts to a maximum of 250 words, when necessary.
- Ensure tables are clear, consistent, and aligned with style guidelines (figures are edited separately by the Operations Coordinator).
- Collaborate with the editorial workflow, which includes:
- Additional review and citation verification by the Operations Coordinator.
- Final review and approval of copyedits by the Managing Editor for all articles scheduled in the issue lineup.
- Support editorial quality standards that enable the Managing Editor to complete final quality assurance checks prior to production.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Pharmacy, Life Sciences, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
- Proven experience copyediting scientific, medical, or pharmacy publications.
- Familiarity with scientific style guides (e.g., AMA or similar editorial standards) strongly preferred.
- Excellent grammar, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain consistency across manuscripts.
- Ability to meet short turnaround deadlines (1–3 days).
- Experience editing tables, citations, and abstracts in scholarly manuscripts.
- Comfortable working with collaborative editorial workflows and shared document platforms (e.g., SharePoint or similar).
Preferred Skills
- Experience working with peer-reviewed journals or scholarly publications.
- Familiarity with pharmacy or biomedical terminology.
- Ability to provide constructive editorial suggestions while preserving author voice and scientific accuracy.
Compensation
$28-34/hr depending on qualifications
