Position: FRUIT INSPECTOR
Our team in Bellville, Cape Town seeks a dedicated Fruit Inspector to ensure that all fruits meet our company’s strict quality standards before export, guaranteeing our customers receive only the best.
Purpose of the Role
The Fruit Inspector is responsible for conducting thorough examinations, inspections, and testing of fruit quality—including freshness, ripeness, and potential damage or contamination—at various points within the supply chain. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with suppliers, internal teams, warehouse staff, and quality assurance teams to uphold the company’s high standards and comply with regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Inspection and Quality Assessment:
Conduct comprehensive visual and tactile inspections of fruits upon receipt and before dispatch, evaluating parameters such as color, texture, appearance, size, ripeness, and signs of defects or disease.
Sampling and Testing:
Perform sampling procedures and laboratory tests to assess factors such as sugar content, acidity, and moisture levels, ensuring optimal fruit quality.
Regulatory Compliance:
Ensure adherence to food safety standards and company-specific quality protocols, including hygiene and proper handling practices.
Confirm that all products meet relevant food safety and quality regulations. Follow all health and safety procedures mandated by the company.
Record Management:
Maintain accurate documentation of inspection reports, test results, quality issues, corrective actions, and other relevant data to support traceability and quality audits.
Inventory Oversight:
Monitor stock to prevent shipping of overripe or spoiled fruits, ensuring only the best quality products are dispatched.
Collaborative Efforts:
Work jointly with procurement, production, and logistics teams to address quality concerns, implement improvements, and provide guidance on proper handling and storage of fruit.
Additional Office Support:
Provide assistance with administrative or related tasks as required.
Minimum Role Requirements
Skills:
Sound knowledge of various fruit varieties, quality standards, and food safety regulations. Excellent observational skills with a keen eye for detail.
Operational & Work
Conditions:
The ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks. Comfort working in varying environments, including cold storage areas. Flexibility to work shifts, including weekends and holidays, as driven by operational requirements. Required to drive to sites. Valid driver’s license. Operating and utilizing company vehicle according to company policies and procedures and solely for the purpose of inspections.
Experience:
At least 2 years of experience in packhouse quality control or a related field, preferably within the food or agricultural industry.
Qualifications:
Matric certificate. Diploma in Agriculture or an equivalent qualification.
