Materials Quality Engineer II/III (Transportation Engineer II/III)

TxDOT’s Fort Worth District is looking for a Materials Quality Engineer based in Fort Worth, TX. Salary Grade:

Materials Quality Engineer I: (B24) $5,425.33 – $8,886.16 (monthly)

Materials Quality Engineer II: (B25) $5,797.66 – $9,508.25 (monthly)

This posting is for one (1) Transportation Engineer I or II, depending on business need and applicants’ qualifications.

Position Description

Materials Quality Engineer I:

Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Materials Quality Engineer II:

Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Materials Quality Engineer I:

Assists in monitoring material testing requirements and results for compliance with specifications.
Develops and/or reviews engineering related documents, correspondence, reports and remediation plans.
Investigates materials failures or fabrication problems; reviews test data and assists in determining cause of failing materials.
Performs and/or coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special specifications or special provisions.

Materials Quality Engineer II (additional duties):

Assists district and division personnel on material and/or fabrication requirements and advises of appropriate material and/or fabrication application and acceptability.
Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.
May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
Provides design engineering support for districts in project development. (Geotechnical Engineering)

Minimum Qualifications:

Materials Quality Engineer I:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science bachelor’s or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience: 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Materials Quality Engineer II:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science bachelor’s or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience: 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Licensed Prof Engineer*
If performing underwater bridge inspections: Must have Open Water Diver certification.
For Bridge Inspection: Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector’s Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within (1) year of date of hire.
Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Materials Quality Engineer II (additional competencies):

Standards and specifications for bridges and other transportation structures
Pavement concepts, methods, policies and requirements
Contract development and oversight
Monitoring the status and progress of projects

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
Subject to noise
Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
