The Gage Calibration Technician / Quality Inspector is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, traceability, and control of the company’s measuring and inspection equipment while supporting product quality through inspection activities. This role serves as the primary owner of the Gage calibration system and helps maintain compliance with customer requirements and the ISO 9001 Quality Management System.
Calibration and control of measuring equipment is the primary responsibility of this position. Product inspection activities are performed as needed to support production demands, customer requirements, quality initiatives, and business priorities.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and capable of working independently while collaborating effectively with production, engineering, and quality teams. This position requires strong measurement skills, accurate recordkeeping, and a commitment to continuous improvement and quality excellence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Gage Calibration and Measurement Systems
- Perform calibration, verification, and control activities for measuring and inspection equipment.
- Maintain the company’s calibration system, including schedules, records, identification, and traceability requirements.
- Monitor calibration status and ensure measuring equipment remains compliant and available for production use.
- Maintain complete and accurate calibration records within the PLEX ERP system.
- Coordinate external calibration services and manage equipment requiring third-party calibration.
- Review calibration certificates and supporting documentation for completeness and compliance.
- Identify and remove from service any equipment that is damaged, overdue for calibration, out of tolerance, or otherwise unsuitable for use.
- Maintain calibration standards and reference equipment in proper working condition.
- Manage the inventory of measuring and inspection equipment.
- Support internal, customer, and certification audits by providing calibration documentation and records.
- Assist in evaluating, improving, and maintaining the effectiveness of the company’s measurement management system.
Quality Inspection
- Perform incoming, first-piece, in-process, final, and customer-required inspections.
- Inspect stamped, formed, fabricated, welded, and assembled products using appropriate measuring equipment.
- Utilize calipers, micrometers, height gages, indicators, pin gages, bore gages, and other precision measurement tools.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, GD&T requirements, and customer quality standards.
- Record and maintain accurate inspection data and traceability documentation.
- Identify, document, and communicate nonconforming material and quality concerns.
- Support production personnel by providing measurement assistance and interpreting inspection requirements.
- Assist in investigations involving dimensional discrepancies, customer complaints, and internal quality issues.
- Support preparation of PPAP documentation, dimensional layouts, capability studies, and inspection reports as required.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in gage calibration, dimensional inspection, quality inspection, machining, manufacturing, or a related technical field.
- Ability to accurately perform measurements and document inspection results.
- Experience using precision measuring equipment, including calipers, micrometers, indicators, and height gages.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and written procedures.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer applications.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and recordkeeping skills.
- Ability to work independently and effectively with production, engineering, and quality personnel.
- Basic mathematical and analytical skills.
Preferred
- Experience in stamping, metal fabrication, forming, welding, machining, or related manufacturing environments.
- Working knowledge of GD&T.
- Experience with ERP, quality management, or calibration tracking systems.
- Familiarity with PLEX, GageTrak, or similar calibration management software.
- Knowledge of calibration principles, measurement uncertainty, and gage control practices.
- Understanding of ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025 calibration requirements.
- Experience maintaining calibration systems and supporting audits.
