Description
The Quality Assurance Department Manager manages the quality and food safety of products manufactured at the Lakeland Dairy. This includes overseeing the food safety and quality systems at the facility, ensuring requirements to maintain compliance with Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO), conducting oversight inspection throughout operations, and supervising a team of lab technicians. The Quality Assurance Department Manager reports to the Sr. Manager of Food Safety.Responsibilities include:
Implementing and managing the Safe Quality Foods (SQF) certification program in alignment to the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI)
Directing and developing food safety and quality management programs including
*
Paturtized Milk Ordinance (PMO)
Preventive Controls for Human Foods (PCHF)
Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP)
Standard Sanitation Operating Procedures (SSOPs)
Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs)
Integrated Pest Management
Internal Quality Auditing programs
Environmental Monitoring and
Allergen Control programs
Developing and training Quality Assurance (QA) inspectors, laboratory technicians, sanitation associates and facility associates as pertaining to food safety and quality
Acting as the facility’s primary advocate during interactions with regulatory agencies, certification bodies and for conducting facility internal audits, this includes
Participating in announced and unannounced regulatory audits by FDA, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services or other regulatory bodies including one to five days of facility walkthroughs, records review, process evaluations and reporting results to facility and corporate management
Preparing for annual certification audits (SQF, kosher, etc.) including annual review of policy manuals including food safety plans, multiple days of on-site facility audit, records review, process evaluation and reporting results to facility and corporate management
Providing support to the Sr. Manager of Food Safety for Manufacturing and Distribution for special projects, Objective Advocate reporting and compliance activities related primarily to food safety and product quality and
Communicating with customers, CQA, Retail Business Units (RBUs) and Risk Management concerning complaints or questions about Publix manufactured products.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Food Safety or Food Science related course of study or equivalent experience
Three years of experience in a Manufacturing environment or equivalent experience
Two years of leadership experience or equivalent experience
HACCP Basic Training
Ability to obtain SQF Certified Practitioner within the first year
Ability to obtain FDA approved Preventive Controls Qualified Individual status within the first year
Knowledge or Federal and State Regulatory requirements specific to food safety and related areas (PMO, State Food Codes, Weights and Measures, Code of Federal Regulations) and the principles behind these requirements affecting retail, manufacturing, warehousing and distribution
Knowledge of a retail supermarket, manufacturing, warehousing, distribution processes and programs impacting food safety
Knowledge of the interactions between Federal (FDA, CDC) and state agencies
Knowledge of food manufacturing practices
Knowledge of food microbiology and chemistry
Knowledge of traceability in foods
Critical thinking skills
Interpersonal skills
Ability to demonstrate initiative
Ability to demonstrate vision
Leadership and managerial skills
Ability to remain calm during crisis situations
Ability to multi-task and handle more than one priority at a time
Communication skills in both written and verbal format
Knowledge of basic microbiology

Ability to travel, including overnight stays and travel by air
Willingness to work a variable schedule including nights, holidays and weekends to meet the needs of our support customers.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Microbiology, Food Safety or Food Science related course of study or equivalent experience
Three years of Publix Manufacturing management experience
SQF Certified Practitioner
Certified Professional Food Manager
Advanced HACCP Training
SQF Certified Consultant

Year End Bonus
As a year-end bonus to associates, Publix issues one month’s extra pay (pro-rated in the first year) each year if associate remains employed through issue date of the bonus check that year. This is calculated as a 13th month of pay in the Potential Annual Pay with Bonus line above.
