Key Responsibilities
Lead analysis and benchmarking activities and review findings to recommend effective plant biodiversity policy options in alignment with identified challenges, as well as relevant local, federal, and international policies, regulations, and standards
Collaborate with the Section Manager of Plant Resources and Habitat Restoration to contribute to the development of the Environmental Strategy and associated plans, in coordination with the Integrated Environment Policy and Planning sector, and ensure effective presentation of emerging terrestrial biodiversity and conservation issues
Work with the Habitat Rehabilitation and Conservation unit to devise conservation programs for threatened species and habitats and provide guidance and support when needed
Review and update policies to align with biodiversity priorities and objectives to facilitate effective management and conservation of terrestrial biodiversity
Consult with the Habitat Rehabilitation and Conservation section to develop or update standard operating procedures and guidelines for terrestrial assessment and monitoring in accordance with established quality standards
Support the organization and facilitation of consultation sessions with decision-makers to ensure the provision of relevant information and engage stakeholders in selecting appropriate terrestrial biodiversity policies
Develop tools to evaluate the effectiveness of proposed policies, analyze results, and recommend appropriate improvements
Monitor and evaluate the performance of plant biodiversity and forestry policies against set targets, identifying issues and recommending corrective measures
Analyze assessment and monitoring data and provide input to the Animal Conservation and Reintroduction unit on priorities and best practices
Develop and implement plant biodiversity conservation plans and projects to ensure the sustainable use and protection of terrestrial biodiversity
Create a classification system for terrestrial protected areas (TPAs), evaluate existing ones, and propose new areas to establish a comprehensive and representative network
Develop enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance with plant-related legislation and regulations
Coordinate with relevant government entities on CITES-related issues and assist in addressing regional plant biodiversity concerns as needed
Conduct plant assessment, monitoring, inventory, and research activities in biodiversity hotspots following established priorities, standards, and guidelines
Develop and implement management plans for the Habitat Rehabilitation and Conservation unit outside TPAs to ensure effective habitat restoration and conservation
Provide feedback to the Environment Quality Sector on assessment and permitting regulations for projects impacting plant biodiversity
Develop environmental strategies in coordination with the Integrated Policy and Planning sector to support sustainable biodiversity conservation
Perform any other duties as requested by the reporting manager
