Laboratory Assistant
Med-Medicine – Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh – (25001946)
The University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Medicine’s Renal-Electrolyte Division is seeking a Laboratory Assistant for Dr. Carattino’s lab, one of our center cores. The Physiology Core serves as a national resource for investigators who wish to study ion transporters and associated regulatory proteins using: (i) isolated tubules of defined identity; or (ii) primary cell isolates, established cell lines, iPS cell-derived kidney organoids and heterologous expression systems. The Physiology Core coordinates with our Model System Core to support in vitro studies using cultured epithelia, kidney organoids and isolated rodent tubules, and interfaces with our Resource Development/Imaging Core in using specific fluorescent tools to measure transporter expression and function. A major strength and focus of this Core is the incorporation of well-established and new, state-of-the-art techniques to facilitate investigations in the areas of kidney physiology and pathophysiology. One example is tubule perfusion, a once dying art, which the Physiology Core has now adapted to assess tubular function in novel rodent models and in nephron progenitor- and ureteric bud-derived organoids.
Job Summary
Performs general laboratory tasks, maintains inventory and equipment and orders supplies and parts, performs quality control testing, and assists other staff.
Essential Functions
Completes general laboratory chores, including scheduling, stocking, cleaning, autoclaving, glass washing, sterilization of laboratory glassware, preparing buffers, making of agars for research experiment, and operating and setting up laboratory and research equipment.
Maintains supply inventory and equipment maintenance for courses and research projects; orders supplies and equipment/parts as necessary or directed.
Organizes experimental tests relevant to assigned project.
Assists others in lab as directed/needed under close supervision.
Performs quality control testing in accordance to prescribed protocols; evaluates test results. Records all quality controls instituted to ensure test validity (calibrates and maintains laboratory equipment). Adheres to departmental safety standards in responsibly handling, processing, and testing biological materials.
Physical Effort
Must be able to stand and sit for prolonged periods of time.
Must be able to walk to and from facilities.
