Role Overview
Zutari is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Materials Inspector to support the delivery of high-quality infrastructure and built environment projects. The role is responsible for inspecting, sampling, and verifying construction materials and related works to ensure compliance with approved specifications, project quality requirements, and applicable standards.
The successful candidate will work closely with site supervision, contractors, laboratories, and quality teams to help ensure that materials incorporated into the works are fit for purpose, properly documented, and aligned with project requirements. This role is important to maintaining quality, reducing rework, and supporting safe, sustainable project delivery.
Responsibilities
- Carry out routine site inspections, sampling, and testing of construction materials to confirm compliance with approved material submittals, project specifications, and relevant standards.
- Inspect delivered materials, review supporting documentation, and verify identification, certification, and traceability before acceptance for use on site.
- Identify, record, and report non-conforming materials, and support the resolution process in coordination with the project team.
- Witness and monitor sampling and testing activities for materials such as soils, aggregates, asphalt, concrete, steel, water, and utility-related products in accordance with inspection and test plans.
- Inspect material-related aspects of civil and infrastructure works, including roadworks, concrete works, reinforcement, structural steel, drainage, utilities, and associated components.
- Review material storage, handling, preservation, and protection practices at site stores, laydown areas, and stockyards.
- Maintain accurate inspection records, sampling registers, testing logs, and related quality documentation.
- Support the preparation of site reports, quality observations, and non-conformance records where required.
- Liaise effectively with resident engineers, site engineers, contractors, laboratories, health and safety teams, and quality personnel to support coordinated project delivery.
- Promote compliance with project quality, health and safety, and environmental requirements at all times.
Requirements
- Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Technology, Materials Engineering, or a related field.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
- Experience on major infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, tunnels, water, stormwater, or utility networks.

- Familiarity with accredited laboratory testing procedures and reporting requirements.
- Understanding of non-conformance reporting, corrective actions, and quality assurance systems.
- Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience in materials inspection on construction or infrastructure projects.

- Practical experience in the inspection, sampling, and testing of key construction materials, including concrete, asphalt, soils, aggregates, and steel.

- Ability to read and interpret drawings, technical submittals, material certificates, and laboratory test results.
- Good working knowledge of site quality documentation, inspection processes, and record management.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to manage multiple inspection activities in a fast-paced site environment.
- Strong attention to detail, sound judgement, and a collaborative working style.
