Mold Inspector Jobs in Austin, TX at House of Thyme LLC

Mold Inspector (MAT, MAC or Trainee) | Full-Time | Austin, Texas

We’re looking for our first full-time hire in Austin to conduct mold and indoor air quality inspections.

You may already be a licensed MAT or MAC, or you could have no mold experience at all but have a strong background in residential construction, home building, home inspections or something similar.

For the right person, we’ll teach you about mold and pay for your training to become a Mold Assessment Technician. Must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and be willing and able to complete the training, examination and licensing requirements to become a Texas Mold Assessment Technician. If this is you, please share with us anything you think may be relevant in terms of transferable knowledge to this position.

For a MAT, you’ll conduct field assessments and sampling under the appropriate supervision, document your findings carefully, communicate with clients and contribute to the assessment and reporting process.

For a MAC, you’ll have greater responsibility for assessments and reports, including reviewing and signing reports where required. As we grow, we’d like the right MAC to have the opportunity to oversee MATs, help with training and quality control, and eventually take on more management responsibility.

Roles & Responsibilities

The exact responsibilities will depend on whether you join us as a trainee, MAT or MAC, but the role will include a combination of:

  • Conducting residential mold assessments
  • Looking for moisture intrusion, construction defects and conditions that could contribute to mold growth
  • Using moisture meters, thermal imaging and other assessment equipment
  • Collecting air and surface samples when appropriate
  • Taking good photos and detailed field notes
  • Reviewing laboratory results
  • Preparing clear, thorough reports
  • Explaining findings to homeowners
  • Maintaining accurate documentation and following Texas mold regulations
  • Taking care of equipment and keeping it organized
  • Providing a high level of customer service in people’s homes
  • Continuing to learn about mold, moisture, construction and building science

Important Traits To Have

  • Punctual. You show up on time to jobs.
  • Friendly. You’re comfortable talking to people, listening to their concerns and explaining things clearly.
  • You take pride in your work. You have a hard time doing anything but your best because that’s just not how you’re wired.
  • You own your mistakes. Mistakes are fine. We use mistakes to improve our systems and processes so they don’t happen again.
  • You’re comfortable working independently. Other than training and occasional ride-outs, you’ll be working by yourself most of the time.
  • You’re open to better ways of doing things. We’re a new company and we’re going to keep improving and changing our systems as we grow.
  • Physical Requirements: The role requires being able to carry a large equipment case, climb a ladder, crawl into attics or crawlspaces.

Schedule

This is a full-time position Monday through Friday and approximately 9:00–5:00. To give you an idea of what the job actually looks like, a few sample days could be:

Day 1: Full-day assessment from 9:00–3:00. Drop lab samples off on the way home, respond to a few customer emails and finish up a report.

Day 2: Morning job from 9:00–12:00. Respond to emails and call back a couple of customers. Afternoon job from 2:00–4:00. Drop samples off on the way home and call a mold remediation company back to answer questions about a protocol.

Day 3: First morning job from 9:00–10:30, second job from 11:00–2:00, then work on reports for the afternoon.

*At the moment we only do jobs Monday-Friday but are open to being flexible if you are interested in sometimes taking weekend jobs and taking off a weekday if customers are interested in booking weekend appointments.

Driving & Service Area

We currently serve Travis County but will be extending this service area in the future. You will need a valid driver’s license and your own vehicle for appointments.

Your drive from home to your first job and from your final job home is your normal commute and is not reimbursed. Mileage between jobs is reimbursed at the current IRS mileage rate.

As much as reasonably possible, we try to schedule jobs within a 30-minute radius of where you live and try to book jobs on the same day in the same area so that the drive between appointments is short.

Background Check

Because you’ll be working independently inside people’s homes, a criminal background check is required for this position.

Compensation

Compensation will depend on whether you’re being hired as a trainee, MAT or MAC, as well as your relevant experience.

We’re deliberately keeping this somewhat open because we’re more interested in finding the right person than filling one exact level of the position.

If you come to us as a trainee, we’ll pay for the training and licensing required to become an MAT. If you’re already a MAT, we’d like to help you work toward becoming a MAC if that’s something you want. If you’re already a MAC, there’s an opportunity to take on more responsibility as we grow.

We want to see people progress to the next level and move up in our organization as we grow.

Vacation & Time Off

We currently offer:

  • 10 paid vacation days per year
  • 5 paid sick/personal days per year
  • Paid company closure from December 25 through January 1, separate from your vacation days

Interview Process

1) We’ll start with a phone call. Then Jonathan will meet you for a coffee or zoom if you aren’t in Austin yet and make sure it feels like a good fit.

2) The next step will be a paid ride-out day where you will join Jonathan for a day of inspections. We want you to experience what the work is actually like before you commit to the role.
