Job Title: Food Safety Assistant

Location: Livonia, MI

Department: Quality Assurance / Food Safety

Reports To: Food Safety Manager

Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Food Safety Assistant to support our food

safety and quality assurance programs. This role is crucial in maintaining compliance with food

safety regulations, ensuring that all preventive controls are effectively implemented, and

verifying the accuracy of operational processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong

understanding of food science principles, HACCP, allergen control, and preventive controls.

Key Responsibilities

1. Equipment Calibration & Verification

Perform routine calibration and verification of food safety-related equipment (e.g.,

thermometers, scales, etc.).

Maintain accurate calibration records and ensure compliance with internal and

regulatory standards.

Identify and troubleshoot equipment discrepancies to ensure precise measurements and

monitoring.

2. Preventive Controls Verification

Conduct verification activities to ensure preventive controls (e.g., CCPs, allergen

management, sanitation) are properly implemented and documented.

Assist in reviewing and validating process control measures to mitigate food safety

hazards.

Work closely with production and quality teams to ensure corrective actions are taken

when deviations occur.

3. Operational Audits for Food Safety Compliance

Perform daily operational audits focusing on GMPs, sanitation, allergen control, and food

safety practices.

Identify non-conformances and collaborate with relevant departments to implement

corrective and preventive actions.

Assist in internal audits to ensure compliance with FSMA, HACCP, and company food

safety policies.

4. Documentation & Paperwork Verification

Review and verify production records, sanitation logs, allergen control logs, and other

food safety documentation for accuracy and completeness.

Ensure all records meet regulatory and third-party audit requirements.
Support the preparation of reports, audits, and regulatory submissions.

Qualifications & Skills

Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Biology, or a

related field preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered.

Experience: 1-2 years in a food safety, quality assurance, or regulatory compliance role

within the food industry is preferred.

Knowledge:

o HACCP principles and preventive controls under FSMA.

o Allergen control programs and labeling requirements.

o Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and sanitation principles.

o Basic microbiological concepts related to food safety.

Skills:

o Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

o Ability to analyze data and recognize trends or deviations.

o Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).

o Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

o Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

Must be able to work in a food production environment, including cold storage and

processing areas.

Ability to stand for long periods and perform tasks that may require bending, lifting (up

to 25 lbs.), and repetitive motion.

Must be comfortable working in environments with food allergens and strong odors.
