We are looking for a freelance QA / Compliance Consultant (12-16 hrs/week) to support the setup and readiness of a new ISO 22000-based facility with cleanroom-related controls aligned with ISO 14644.
The facility will be used for the development and production of semi-finished products / potential ingredients that may be supplied to downstream customers. In addition, the facility may produce small-scale product batches, samples, or prototypes for development, testing, validation, customer evaluation, or early-stage manufacturing.
The assignment
The consultant will help ensure that the facility, documentation, and quality systems are practical, risk-based, and ready to support first customer interactions, prototype production, and future scale-up.
The role requires someone who can work closely with the R&D team, understand evolving production processes, and translate technical development activities into a clear, practical, and audit-ready QA documentation structure.
The consultant will also provide guidance on the creation and review of complete, evidence-based documentation, including a clear overview of what is currently available, what is missing, and what supporting proof exists. Based on this assessment, the consultant will help shape a realistic build-up plan for the quality system, ensuring that the startup can move forward responsibly without taking on unnecessary risks or inappropriate responsibilities as a producer of semi-finished products, potential ingredients, and prototypes.
What you’ll do
- Review the current facility setup against ISO 22000 and relevant cleanroom expectations
- Advise on the required QA, food safety, hygiene, contamination-control, and documentation systems
- Review, improve, or help create core QMS / FSMS documents, including:
- Review the documentation needed to support semi-finished products, potential ingredients, and small-scale prototypes
- Define what evidence is available, what is missing, and how it should be organized into an audit- or customer-ready QA pack
- Advise on minimum viable QA requirements for first customer readiness
- Support R&D and production teams in translating evolving processes into practical quality controls
- Help define testing, qualification, validation, and external laboratory support requirements
- Support preparation for customer audits, customer qualification, or future ISO 22000 certification readiness
- In the beginning you will be once a week in Leeuwarden at the start-up location. Furthermore you will either work from Aalsmeer or home-office.
What we’re looking for
- Hands-on experience setting up, implementing, reviewing, or auditing ISO 22000 systems
- Experience with HACCP, food safety risk assessments, and prerequisite programs
- Experience with cleanroom or controlled-environment facilities, preferably aligned with ISO 14644
- Strong experience reviewing, writing, and improving QA / QMS / FSMS documentation
- Experience in regulated production environments such as food, feed, ingredients, biotech, fermentation, specialty materials, cosmetics, or related sectors
- Experience supporting R&D, prototype production, pilot production, or scale-up environments
- Ability to work with technical and R&D teams where processes may still be evolving
- Practical understanding of how to control semi-finished products, potential ingredients, samples, and prototypes
- Strong risk-based thinking and the ability to distinguish between what is essential now and what can be implemented later
- Ability to work independently and deliver clear, structured written outputs
- A flexible, pragmatic mindset suited to a startup environment.
