Quality Assurance Manager (Part-Time / Contract / Retired Professional)
This position is based at: Johannesburg
The Quality Assurance Manager is a senior, independent technical role responsible for providing oversight and assurance on the quality, compliance, and risk posture of engineering outputs and commercial submissions at Henry Fagan (Pty) Ltd. The role leverages extensive professional experience to uphold engineering standards, mitigate technical and contractual risks, and support Technical Heads and Project Leaders through expert review and advisory input.
This position reports directly to the Managing Director / Chief Executive Officer.
The incumbent may operate on a part-time, contract, or advisory basis, with flexibility to work remotely, in a hybrid model, or from the office, with periodic attendance as required.
Responsibilities (not exhaustive)
- Review engineering drawings, reports, specifications, and calculations for compliance and accuracy.
- Ensure alignment with design standards, codes, and client requirements.
- Conduct independent technical reviews at key project milestones.
- Identify quality risks and recommend corrective actions.
- Support continuous improvement of quality management systems (QMS).
Tender and Proposal Review
- Review tender submissions to ensure technical compliance and completeness.
- Identify technical, commercial, programme, and resourcing risks.
- Assess assumptions, exclusions, and qualifications.
- Provide input on technical approaches, method statements, and programme feasibility.
- Advise on bid risks and tender clarifications.
Contract and Commercial Risk Support
- Review engineering-related contract clauses, including scope, liabilities, and performance standards.
- Identify contractual risks impacting delivery and compliance.
- Advise on mitigation strategies and professional risk exposure.
Project Oversight and Risk Management
- Review project reports to identify technical, quality, and programme risks.
- Provide independent feedback to Technical Heads and leadership.
- Support resolution of complex technical and quality-related issues.
Advisory and Mentorship
- Act as a trusted advisor to Directors, Project Managers, and engineers.
- Mentor engineers on quality, standards, and risk awareness.
- Promote ethical engineering practices in line with ECSA requirements.
Contribute to technical forums, peer reviews, and knowledge-sharing initiatives
Job Requirements Qualifications and Experience
- BSc / BEng / BTech (Engineering) or equivalent qualification.
- Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) or Professional Engineering Technologist (Pr Tech Eng) registered with ECSA, in good standing.
- Minimum 20–30 years’ experience in professional engineering services.
- Experience in roles such as Quality Assurance Manager, Technical Director, Discipline Lead, or similar.
- Proven experience in multidisciplinary engineering projects and design office leadership.
- Demonstrated experience reviewing engineering drawings, reports, tenders, and contracts.
