We are seeking a meticulous and experienced Quality Lab Lead to oversee and perform critical quality control functions within our state-of-the-art manufacturing environment. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on leader, proficient in a variety of inspection techniques and equipment, with a strong commitment to upholding the highest quality standards. As the Quality Lab Lead, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring product integrity, maintaining our reputation for excellence, and driving continuous improvement within the quality department.
Key Responsibilities:
Dimensional Inspection and Verification:
Calculate and meticulously verify complex dimensions, geometric tolerances, and surface finishes of manufactured components and assemblies against engineering drawings, specifications, and 3D models.
Develop and execute comprehensive inspection plans, including identifying appropriate measurement strategies and layout procedures.
Analyze and interpret measurement data to determine conformance to specifications, identifying trends and potential process issues.
Investigate and troubleshoot dimensional non-conformances, collaborating with engineering and production teams to implement corrective actions.
Metrology Equipment Proficiency and Calibration:
Expertly operate, maintain, and calibrate a wide range of precision measuring instruments, including but not limited to micrometers (outside, inside, depth), bore gages, thread gages (plugs, rings, wires), calipers, height gages, optical comparators, and surface profilometers.
Ensure all inspection equipment is properly calibrated according to established schedules and procedures, maintaining accurate calibration records.
Develop and implement best practices for gage handling, storage, and maintenance to ensure longevity and accuracy.
Incoming Material Inspection and Approval:
Perform thorough inspections of incoming raw materials, components, and subcontracted parts against purchase orders, certificates of conformance, and material specifications.
Approve or reject incoming materials based on defined acceptance criteria, documenting all findings and communicating discrepancies to relevant stakeholders (e.g., procurement, engineering).
Maintain organized records of incoming material inspections, including lot traceability and supplier performance data.
Lab Management and Safety:
Oversee the day-to-day operations of the quality lab, ensuring all measuring equipment is properly maintained, organized, and in good working order.
Champion and enforce a clean, safe, and organized work environment within the quality lab, adhering to all company safety policies and procedures (e.g., 5S principles).
Manage inventory of lab supplies and consumables.
May involve training and mentoring junior quality personnel on proper inspection techniques and equipment usage.
Documentation and Reporting:
Prepare detailed inspection reports, non-conformance reports (NCRs), and other quality-related documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
Maintain comprehensive and organized records of all quality control activities.
Assist in the development and refinement of quality procedures and work instructions.
Qualifications:
Required:
Blueprint Interpretation Mastery: Proven ability to read, interpret, and meticulously analyze complex engineering drawings, technical specifications, and manufacturing blueprints, including understanding symbols, notes, and revision controls.
Industry Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of hands-on experience in a quality assurance or inspection role within a precision manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, medical device, or closely related industry.
Advanced Shop Gauging Expertise: Demonstrated advanced knowledge of a wide array of shop gauging equipment, including proficient setup, operation, and application for various inspection tasks.
Strong Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively articulate technical information, inspection results, and quality concerns to diverse audiences including management, engineering, and production staff.
Effective Prioritization and Time Management: Proven ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize daily workload effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Problem-Solving Acumen: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen eye for detail and a methodical approach to troubleshooting quality issues.
Preferred:
GD&T Proficiency: In-depth knowledge and practical application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles and symbols (ASME Y14.5 standard).
CMM Operation/Programming Experience: Hands-on experience operating and potentially programming Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) using software such as PC-DMIS, Calypso, MCOSMOS, or similar.
Machining Background: Previous experience or strong familiarity with various machining processes (e.g., CNC milling, turning, grinding) and their impact on part quality.
ISO 9001 or AS9100 Familiarity: Working knowledge of ISO 9001, AS9100, or other relevant quality management system standards and procedures, including experience with internal or external audits.
ERP/MRP Software Knowledge: Familiarity with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) software, with specific experience in JobBoss or similar production control systems being a significant advantage.
Supervisory or Lead Experience: Previous experience in a lead or supervisory role within a quality department is a plus.
