Department Information

One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. Ranked 5th in the nation among genetics departments for National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding in 2023, the department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

Works with a team of laboratory staff to complete CAP/CLIA accredited clinical genetic testing to diagnose and/or manage patients.
Accessions, processes, and analyzes patient specimens following standard operating procedures.

General Responsibilities

Performs analysis and interpretation of patient results.
Troubleshoots, reviews, and improves laboratory procedures, quality control, and quality assurance monitoring.
Performs activities related to the basic maintenance and operation of the laboratory including creation of lab reagents, monitoring of laboratory supplies, and participation in quality control/quality assurance activities.
Maintains documentation and reporting information.
Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

Bachelor’s degree in a related science field.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

Experience with DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, or Sanger Sequencing.
Experience working in a clinical laboratory.

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Testing methods primarily used in this position include DNA/RNA extraction, PCR (including real-time PCR), and use of genotyping analysis software. Sanger Sequencing, analyte extraction, liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry are also methods used by technicians in this position. Patient specimen types studied include, but are not limited to, bone marrow, whole blood, plasma, CSF, and urine samples.

Advertised Salary

$58,003.20 to $63,003.20 per year based on experience and internal equity within the department.
