Summar Description of Position
The Quality Control Technician is responsible for inspecting and testing materials being produced and sold at any Vulcan location in SC. Must be able to prepare and test materials in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), all regulating Department of Transportation standards, and VMC standards. Accurately interprets and reports test results, examines causes of poor product quality, researches causes of complaints, and implements corrective action.
Acts as a source of knowledge to operations personnel with the ability to advise and recommend changes.
Qualifications
Education, Experience, Licenses, Certifications & Skills Required
Education: High School diploma or its equivalent is required. Some college preferred but not required.
Experience: 3-5 years of laboratory testing experience in construction aggregate properties preferred. Works under limited supervision performing standard and advanced testing, interprets and records test results, reports problems, and may teach test procedures to less experienced technicians.
Certifications: Current SCDOT Coarse Aggregate Level I and II Technician Certification required. GDOT and NCDOT sampling and testing certifications are preferred or ability to obtain within 6 months.
License: Must have a valid driver license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Good math skills, ability to perform arithmetic calculations, use computerized equipment and technology, proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google, Oracle Business Environment, attentive to detail, capable of performing material testing efficiently and accurately, good verbal communication skills, problem-solving ability, and ability to work independently.
Essential Functions
Samples and conducts testing on aggregates conforming to standard test methods including ASTM, AASHTO, and DOT standards.
Performs testing proficiently and accurately, communicates results timely, and documents in database.
Troubleshoots problems and reviews product specifications.
Visually inspects stockpiles, materials sources, and truck loads; monitors construction of stockpiles to minimize segregation and contamination; notifies management if contamination is identified.
Conducts testing and assists in plant calibrations to ensure product quality.
Completes reports accurately and maintains files.
Inspects, calibrates, and maintains testing equipment periodically.
Maintains housekeeping standards in the lab.
Develops and maintains relationships with inspectors and customers for communication and resolution of quality issues.
Assists with special projects and performs other duties as assigned.
Other Requirements
Knowledge of construction and mining site hazards.
Wears protective gear in the field, including safety glasses, steel toe boots, hearing protection, and hard hats.
Must lift and transport sample buckets and bags up to 50 pounds.
