The Laboratory Technician, Bayway Refinery plays a key role in testing and analyzing a variety of petroleum products, process streams, and environmental samples in support of quality assurance and control. The Technician works in a technically complex, highly automated laboratory within the largest refinery on the East Coast.

The laboratory at Bayway Refinery supports a 24/7 operating schedule, therefore Technicians are assigned to a rotating EOWEO (every other weekend off) work schedule that could cover days, nights, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities May Include:
Demonstrating awareness and commitment to safety

Upholding company values, understanding and implementing all relevant company policies and procedures to ensure all work meets the required standard

Taking samples/readings of various process streams

Writing cohesive reports, documents and memos

Performing various quality assurance and quality control tests on product/process samples per procedure

Interpreting data and analyzing validity

Assisting and training other Laboratory Technicians

Reporting data using lab information management system

Performing routine maintenance/troubleshooting on laboratory equipment

Reviewing QA/QC charts for trends and results

Documenting and recording findings according to established procedures

Occasionally required to work outdoors with exposure to weather elements; some lifting is required

Working with outside contractors and agencies

Participating in safety reviews

Participating in annual training refreshers

Required Qualifications:
Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions

1 or more years of laboratory or refinery/petrochemical work experience

High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Valid driver’s license

Intermediate or better proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic

Willing and able to perform/comply, with or without reasonable accommodation, with the following:

Work shift schedule, including but not limited to days, nights, weekend, holidays, rotating shift

Wear Nomex fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel toe shoes, ear and eye protection)

Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

Standing in place for long periods

Walking on flat surfaces or slight inclines

Lifting and/or carrying objects weighing between 10 and 50 lbs.

Bending, stooping, kneeling and reaching below the waist, from waist to shoulder and above shoulder

Preferred Qualifications:
Associate’s Degree or higher in Chemistry, Biology, Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or Process Technology

3 or more years of lab technician experience in the refining or petrochemical industry

Experience working in a refinery or industrial setting

Knowledge of applicable ASTM, EPA, Federal, State, County regulatory requirements

Ability to learn and perform all procedures used in a Quality Control Lab for product testing

Demonstrated proficiency in laboratory software

The Bayway Refinery is located on the New York Harbor in Linden, New Jersey. Bayway’s facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, solvent deasphalting, hydrodesulfurization and alkylation units. The complex also includes a polypropylene plant with the capacity to produce up to 775 million pounds per year. The refinery processes mainly light and medium, low-sulfur crude oil. Foreign crude oil is supplied to the refinery by tanker, and domestic crude oil is supplied through a combination of rail and marine transportation. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels, as well as petrochemical feedstocks, residual fuel oil and home heating oil. Refined products are distributed to East Coast customers by pipeline, barge, rail car and truck.

The base pay for this position is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The starting rate is $41.96 per hour with periodic increases until reaching the fully qualified rate of $53.59 after 2.5 years. The starting rate will go up to $43.86 on November 1, 2025. This position has a 7.5% Variable Cash Incentive Program target, 8% 401k match, and Cash Balance Account pension.
