Quality Inspector – Machined Parts

Job Description

We are a growing machine shop seeking a Quality Inspector to join our team. The Quality Inspector will be responsible for inspecting precision-machined components to ensure they conform to mechanical drawings, customer requirements, and established quality standards.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, dependable, mechanically inclined, and comfortable using precision inspection equipment. This position works in an environmentally controlled shop and QC laboratory with a wide range of modern inspection equipment. Pay based upon experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect machined parts in accordance with mechanical drawings, specifications, and quality requirements.
  • Perform dimensional inspections using precision measuring hand tools and advanced inspection equipment.
  • Operate a Wenzel 5-axis CMM equipped with a Renishaw PH20 head.
  • Use an optical comparator for dimensional and profile inspection.
  • Use profilometers, surface plates, height gages, micrometers, calipers, depth micrometers, and other precision measuring equipment.
  • Inspect features including outside and inside diameters, depths, chamfers, threads, profiles, and other critical dimensions.
  • Utilize digital OD and ID micrometers, digital depth micrometers, digital calipers up to 48″, chamfer gauges, thread and ring gauges, and gage pins up to 1″ diameter.
  • Interpret mechanical drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and basic geometric requirements.
  • Identify nonconforming parts and communicate quality concerns to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain accurate inspection records and documentation.
  • Assist with maintaining and organizing inspection equipment and the QC laboratory.
  • Participate in shop safety activities and perform assigned safety-related tasks.
  • Assist with inventory control of spare parts and related materials.
  • Support continuous improvement and quality initiatives throughout the shop.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous quality inspection, machining, manufacturing, or mechanical experience is preferred.
  • Experience with precision measuring equipment is highly desirable.
  • Experience operating a CMM is a plus; Wenzel CMM and Renishaw PH20 experience is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to enter, record, and retrieve inspection information.
  • Basic math skills, including measurements, fractions, decimals, and basic calculations.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently as well as effectively with machinists, supervisors, and other team members.
  • Willingness to learn new inspection methods, equipment, and procedures.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods while performing inspections and working throughout the shop.
  • Ability to use precision measuring instruments requiring hand and finger dexterity.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and position parts and inspection equipment as required.
  • Ability to safely handle machined metal components of varying sizes and weights.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment and follow all applicable safety procedures.
