Overview
We are seeking a Quality Inspector / Metrology Specialist who enjoys solving complex measurement challenges. Our machine shop specializes in low-volume, high-mix precision machining for aerospace and defense customers. Every day is different. One day you may be inspecting a simple turned component; the next you may be developing a unique inspection strategy for a complex 5-axis machined part.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys critical thinking, hands-on metrology, and collaborating with machinists to determine the best methods for inspecting challenging geometries. Success in this role requires curiosity, sound judgment, and a passion for precision, not simply following repetitive inspection routines.
Duties
- Perform dimensional inspection and quality control checks using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, Faro Arms, and coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) including programming Calypso, PC-DMIS, or similar software.
- Interpret mechanical blueprints and technical drawings, applying GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) principles to verify component specifications.
- Conduct calibration and maintenance of measurement equipment to ensure accuracy and compliance with industry standards.
- Utilize CMM programming skills to develop inspection routines for complex parts, ensuring consistency throughout the production of prototype and production components.
- Review manufacturing processes and quality standards in accordance with AS9100, ISO 9001, and customer-specific requirements.
- Document inspection results accurately in quality management software; prepare detailed reports for quality assurance audits.
- Collaborate with machinists, programmers, and engineering to resolve dimensional issues, improve inspection methods, and support continuous process improvement.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in quality inspection within aerospace or high-precision manufacturing environments.
- Strong knowledge of calibration procedures for measuring instruments such as height gauges, bore gauges, micrometers, calipers, and tooling.
- Proficiency in CMM programming using PC-DMIS or similar software; experience with Calypso is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with industry standards including AS9100, ISO 9001, and GD&T principles.
- Ability to read and interpret complex mechanical blueprints and technical drawings accurately.
- Skilled in dimensional inspection techniques such as mechanical measurement in machining and precision measurement in manufacturing processes.
- Technical proficiency with CAD software like SolidWorks for reviewing design specifications; understanding of technical drawing conventions is essential.
- Excellent mathematical skills for precise measurement calculations; strong mechanical knowledge related to tooling and machining processes.
- Experience with quality assurance documentation, calibration records, and compliance audits.
- Strong communication skills to work effectively within cross-functional teams; detail-oriented mindset with a focus on continuous improvement.
