JOB TITLE: QUALITY MANAGER

Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Quality Manager to lead our quality assurance and control efforts in a dynamic metal fabrication facility specializing in CNC laser cutting, brake press forming, MIG welding, robotic welding, and die & press stampings. The ideal candidate will ensure all products meet or exceed customer specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements while driving continuous improvement in processes and team performance. This role reports directly to the Operations Manager and plays a critical role in maintaining our reputation for precision, reliability, and on-time delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and Maintain Quality Management System (QMS): Implement and oversee ISO 9001-compliant processes, including documentation, procedures, and work instructions tailored to CNC laser cutting, brake pressing, welding, and stamping operations. Responsible for Lead Auditor activities.
- Inspection and Testing Oversight: Lead in-process and final inspections using tools such as CMMs, calipers, micrometers, profilometers, and ultrasonic testers; ensure compliance with GD&T tolerances for laser-cut parts, bent components, welds, and stamped products.
- Process Quality Control: Monitor key processes including laser cutting accuracy (kerf, heat-affected zones), brake press bend angles/repeatability, MIG weld penetration/porosity, robotic weld path programming/consistency, and stamping die progression/part flatness; perform capability studies (CpK) and SPC.
- Non-Conformance Management: Investigate defects, customer complaints, and returns; lead root cause analysis (8D, 5-Why) and implement corrective/preventive actions (CAPA) to minimize scrap, rework, and downtime.
- Supplier and Incoming Quality: Audit and qualify suppliers for raw materials (sheet metal, tubing); conduct FAI (First Article Inspection) and PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) for stamped components.
- Welding Quality Assurance: Ensure compliance with AWS D1.1/D1.2 standards; manage welder certifications, procedure qualifications (WPQR), and robotic weld cell validations.
- Audits and Compliance: Prepare for and host internal/external audits (ISO, customer-specific); maintain certifications and respond to regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA, EPA for fabrication processes).
- Team Leadership: Supervise a team of 4-6 quality engineers, inspectors/technicians; provide training on inspection techniques, blueprint reading, and quality tools; foster a culture of quality ownership across production.
- Continuous Improvement: Champion Lean/Six Sigma initiatives to reduce variation in fabrication processes; track KPIs such as first-pass yield, on-time delivery, and customer satisfaction (PPM < 500).
- Customer Interaction: Collaborate with sales/engineering on RFQ reviews, provide quality data for quotes, and support onsite customer audits.
- Available to travel to customers as required.
- Responsible for product PPAP submissions to customers.
- Responsible for maintaining the gage-calibration system.
- Documentation and Reporting: Generate quality reports, trend analyses, and dashboards using ERP/MES systems (e.g., Epicor, JobBOSS); ensure traceability from raw material to finished goods.
- Working Hours: Availability to work as needed and including weekends as required. Expect a minimum of 8.5-to-9-hour workday, excluding lunch.
Qualifications
Required:
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Management, or related field preferred.
- Experience:
- 7+ years in quality management within metal fabrication or sheet metal manufacturing.
- Experience with CNC laser cutting (e.g., Trumpf/Bystronic), brake pressing (e.g., Accurpress), MIG/robotic welding, and progressive die stamping.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in GD&T (ASME Y14.5), blueprint reading, and metrology.
- Knowledge of welding codes (AWS), material specs (ASTM), and fabrication standards.
- Experienced with quality software (e.g., Minitab, QC-CALC, Gage R&R).
- Certifications preferred: Certified Quality Manager (CQM), ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), or Six Sigma Green/Black Belt.
