Laboratory Technician in Augusta, ME
These Laboratory Technician positions are responsible for assisting with work for the Environmental Inorganic and Microbiology (IMB) section including the preparation, preservation and analysis of aqueous environmental and drinking water samples for inorganic compounds and microbiological contamination in support of the State’s Safe Drinking Water and Environmental Water Quality programs. These services have been procured through RFQ#2020068 and are needed to provide resources for water testing capabilities. The current sample load for the inorganic section is higher than the current staffing can sustain. Inorganic samples are unique that they have a short acceptable timeline from collection to analysis. Some samples need to be analyzed within 8 hours of collection leaving little leeway for troubleshooting. Proper staffing is critical to provide support to a hard-working team to better provide for our clients, and to protect the health of the state’s citizens as well as protect the environment.
In addition, the Maine HETL is certified under 10-144 Code of Maine Rules, Chapter 263, Department of Health and Human Services jointly with 06-096 Code of Maine Rules, Chapter 263, Department of Environmental Protection.
In accordance with this rule, “Laboratory management must: a. Ensure the laboratory has sufficient personnel with the necessary education, training, technical knowledge and experience for their assigned functions.” These positions are critical to meeting this requirement.
Minimum Qualifications: • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and techniques of laboratory testing. • Knowledge of basic principles of chemistry and biology as related to lab testing. • Ability to use laboratory equipment. • Ability to follow prescribed procedures. • Ability to make accurate observations of test results. • Ability to detect differences in colors. • Ability to use a programmable calculator. • Graduation from High School or equivalency including completion of a laboratory science course -OR- one (1) year laboratory experience. Preferred Qualification: • Bachelor’s degree in a natural science curriculum.
The specific duties of these positions include: •The evaluation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of the instruments used in these analyses DHHS LONG-TERM CONT-STAFF DO 6 • Acceptance or rejection of Quality Control (QC) data • Assessing sample integrity for tests requested • Queueing and execution of the types of testing requested • Update SOPs and maintain proficiency with all assigned analyses • Communicate technical information to federal, state, local agencies, and customers • Reviewing the quality assurance and analytical data • Participation in the daily operations of the testing section of the laboratory • Entering and maintaining data in the laboratory information system (LIMS) • Following all the safety and waste handling protocols of the laboratory See additional duties in attached RFQ# 2020068. This position does not require any business travel.
The Health & Environmental Testing Laboratory enjoys a flex time work environment. After onboarding requirements are met, this position would be operating for approximately eight hours each day within the 6:00 am to 6:00 pm window, Monday through Friday. For microbiological testing work, a half hour of work time may be requested on Saturday mornings in a way that the total work week would not exceed 40 hours
This position is not eligible for work authorization sponsorship (including H-1B sponsorship) by SSO and under the federal laws relating to the F-1 STEM EAD program, this position is not eligible to support a STEM EAD extension application.
Compensation for roles at Staffing Solutions Organization LLC (SSO) varies depending on a wide array of factors including, but not limited to, the specific office location, role, skill set, and level of experience. As required by applicable law, SSO provides a reasonable range of compensation for this role. In addition, SSO provides a range of benefits for this role.
