Aerospace / Defense CWI (Certified Welding Inspector)

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) with a degree in Welding Engineering and a minimum of five years of hands-on experience in aerospace welding and fabrication that holds an AWS CWI certification in AWS D17.1 for aerospace welding. The ideal candidate will bring deep knowledge of aerospace materials, welding codes and standards (AWS D17.1, ASME, NADCAP, etc.), and quality assurance processes to ensure compliance with the highest industry standards. CWI?s are responsible for inspecting welds to ensure they meet specified customer standards.

Responsibilities:

Perform weld inspections in accordance with AWS D17.1, ASME, and aerospace-specific standards
Interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, and specifications for inspection criteria
Conduct visual, dimensional, and NDT inspections to verify weld quality
Collaborate with welding engineers, manufacturing teams, and QA staff to resolve discrepancies
Maintain thorough documentation of inspections and non-conformance reports
Support internal and external audits (e.g., NADCAP, AS9100)
Assist in the development of weld procedures and qualification records (WPS/PQR/WPQ)
Train and mentor weld inspectors and welding technicians

Required Qualifications:

Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) certification (AWS D17.1)
Bachelor?s degree in Welding Engineering or related engineering discipline
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in aerospace welding inspection or fabrication
Proficient in interpreting technical drawings and weld symbols
Strong knowledge of aerospace materials and joining methods
Familiar with NDT methods (VT, PT, MT, RT, UT) and applicable standards
Destructive testing involves examining the macrostructure of a weld, cutting a cross-section, polishing, etching
weld strength, and overall weld quality to reveal details about penetration, fusion, weld profile, and potential defects
Common destructive tests include tensile testing, bend testing, and impact testing
Macro etching and approving microstructure
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to safety and quality

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with NADCAP audits and or AS9100 compliance as well as layered process audits
Additional NDT certifications (e.g., Level II or III)
Familiarity with digital inspection tools and quality management systems
