Senior Quality Inspector — Prototype & Short-Run Machine Shop Jobs in Fairfield, NJ at National Precision Tool Co Inc

Position overview

We are a high-quality prototype and short-run machine shop seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Quality Inspector. This is a hands-on manufacturing role for someone who understands how precision parts are made, measured, and verified—not a laboratory-based inspection position.

The successful candidate will inspect complex machined parts and assemblies, complete first-article documentation, identify nonconforming conditions, and work directly with machinists and production personnel to resolve quality issues.

  • Read, interpret, and apply complex blueprints, sketches, GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing), written specifications, and verbal instructions.
  • Use standard and advanced inspection equipment, including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, pin gauges, thread gauges, optical comparators, CMMs, and other metrology tools.
  • Complete first article inspection reports and maintain accurate inspection documentation.
  • Identify, document, and communicate nonconforming material or parts.
  • Collaborate with machinists, supervisors, and other team members to identify probable causes of defects and support corrective actions.
  • Make sound accept/reject decisions in accordance with drawings, specifications, and inspection requirements.
  • Apply shop math, including geometry and trigonometry, to inspection and measurement activities.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe inspection area and properly handle inspection equipment.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of hands-on quality inspection experience in a machine shop, precision manufacturing, CNC machining, or similar mechanical manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency performing mechanical inspections of close-tolerance parts.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and GD&T.
  • Experience using a range of manual inspection tools, gauges, optical comparator equipment, and CMMs.
  • Thorough understanding of machine-shop and assembly operations.
  • Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and reliable documentation practices.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
