SUMMARY: Responsible for the maintenance, testing, and/or troubleshooting of new and existing metal finishing processes as required to maintain specified production quality levels. Also he is responsible for maintaining N.C. Wastewater Laboratory Certification status and performance of certified wastewater analyses.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include but are not limited to the following:

-Manages Chemical Lab on an operational basis.

-Must develop and maintain a knowledge base of all chemical processes used in production of adequate scope to allow efficient maintenance and trouble shooting of the processes.

-Compiles and maintains a file of all vendor technical data sheets and related technical materials.

-Analyzes component concentrations of metal finishing process baths as needed to determine the required additions necessary to keep the components within specified control limits. Analytical methods include titrations, pH measurements, and AA spectrophotometer readings. Baths must be analyzed with sufficient frequency to maintain components within control limits.

-Conducts Hull cell tests to evaluate process bath performance and to determine brightener additions.

-Troubleshoots production bath problems.

-Records and maintains records of all analyzes including time and date stamp. Issues chemical addition sheets to appropriate personnel. Maintains a record of additions.

-Produces and maintains SPC charts for baths as required.

-Evaluates new chemical processes to determine compatibility and suitability for intended purpose.

– Collects and ships process bath samples to vendors for QC check analyzes.

-Conducts certified wastewater analyzes

-Maintains laboratory reagents, standards, and equipment including procurement of supplies.

-Compiles and maintains certificate of analysis files

-Compiles and maintains current MSDS files.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages one subordinate. Responsibilities include lab organization; scheduling, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Four year science degree and two (2) years of experience in plating or five (5) years of experience in plating. Must understand pH, redox reactions, concepts of concentration, solubility, states of matter, and the concepts of ionic and covalent bonding among others. Must understand physics sufficiently to comprehend operation of spectrophotometer and applicable process problems.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
College Graduate level language skills are required. Must be able to read and understand technical documents quickly. Must be able to read, analyze and interpret drawings, manuals, and instructions. Ability to write descriptions of work and problems encountered and complete complex forms.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

High School general math level skills required. Ability to use basic arithmetic, basic geometry, fractions, ratios, and measurement skills as applied to construction problems. Must have High school algebra skills necessary to handle chemical problems.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions during analysis and trouble shooting of metal finishing processes.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $52,000.00 – $56,160.00 per year
