Position Levels
Project Inspector I
Preferred Qualifications:
Basic knowledge of construction practices and materials
Willingness to learn and grow in a team environment
Strong attention to detail and communication skills
Pay Range: Starting at $23.75 up to $31.70 per hour, depending on qualifications
Project Inspector II
Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum of three years of relevant experience in construction, inspection, or a related field
Basic knowledge of construction materials, inspection techniques, municipal codes, and safety regulations
Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, blueprints, and technical drawings
Familiarity with field testing equipment and inspection documentation software
Pay Range: Starting at $25.50 up to $34.97 per hour, depending on qualifications
Advancement through levels comes with increased responsibilities and pay.
Requirements for All Levels
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid driver’s license with a favorable driving record
Ability to obtain the following certifications within one year of hire:
International Signal Association (IMSA) Work Zone Safety
Erosion and Sediment Control
Nuclear Density Gauge
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM

The Project Inspector I is an entry-level position focused on learning and developing foundational skills in the technical inspection of streets, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, water mains, and other city infrastructure within the Infrastructure Department. This job works closely with their supervisor and senior project inspectors for guidance and training. This is the first of a three-level career progression of a Project Inspector I, II, and III.
Key Responsibilities
Regularly visits construction sites to inspect and monitor progress and ensure compliance with contract documents, engineering plans, and local/state regulations; inspects and monitors items related to site grading, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, waterlines, street construction and a variety of other construction activities; identifies construction problems and works with contractors, engineers, and municipal staff to resolve them.
Ensures both public and private development projects comply with the City of Olathe specifications, standards, and policies; evaluates for quality control to verify that materials and workmanship meet required standards and specifications.
Ensures contractor compliance with approved plans, specifications, codes and safety regulations; confirms that contractors are following the terms of their agreements, including timelines and project scope; conducts or oversees tests such as soil compaction, concrete strength, and maintains accurate records of inspections, reports, and other deficiencies.
Assists with snow removal operations as needed.
Qualifications
Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant experience in construction inspection or a related field is required. Basic knowledge of construction materials, inspection techniques, municipal codes and safety regulations is preferred. Must be able to read and interpret engineering plans, blueprints, and technical drawings. Familiarity with field testing equipment and documentation software is essential.
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. College-level coursework in engineering, construction management, or a related field is preferred.
Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver’s license and favorable driving record are required. Possession of or ability to obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) certifications in Work Zone Safety, Erosion and Sediment Control, and Nuclear Density Gauge within one-year of employment is required.
Environmental or Physical Demands: Work is mainly performed outdoors with exposure to weather conditions which can include extreme heat, cold, rain and wind. May also be exposed to traffic noise, dust, fumes from vehicles and/or machinery. Moderate physical demands: strength sufficient to lift and move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds and bending, kneeling, and reaching are required. ay be exposed to safety hazardous and dangerous tool and equipment.
