Supplier Quality & Development Engineer (Automotive Components)
Location: Lake Orion, Michigan or Springboro, Ohio
Engagement: Contract (potential temp-to-hire)
Compensation: $35.00–$45.00 per hour, based on proven work history
A day in this role
You start your morning reviewing supplier readiness dashboards and performance trends. A mid-morning quality review with a key electronics supplier uncovers a chance to tighten APQP deliverables. After lunch, you lead a cross-functional with Design and Manufacturing Engineering to lock in process parameters at a new powertrain supplier. Before day’s end, you close the loop on a PPAP package, publish scorecards through the Supplier Portal, and align a corrective action plan on a recent nonconformance—moving decisively from root cause to sustained fix.
What you will drive
- Own supplier selection, evaluation, and ongoing management for our components portfolio, strengthening a robust Supplier Development Management System that consistently yields high-quality parts.
- Ensure supplier systems, manufacturing processes, and build capability match customer design intent and end-customer requirements; verify new sources to improve cost competitiveness and continuity.
- Lead the reporting rhythm for supplier performance, improvement plans, and readiness; facilitate recurring quality review meetings with suppliers.
- Assess new and existing suppliers for product, cost, quality, capacity, and fulfillment; confirm adherence to IATF 16949, ISO 9001, ASIL, and internal/customer system expectations.
- Use Lean methods, supplier scorecards, and layered audits to drive compliance, systematic problem solving, and process improvements that deliver measurable value.
- Provide technical leadership across sourcing and supplier development—technology, quality, cost, logistics, and delivery.
- Guide major investigations and special projects; strengthen relationships across the supply base for product development and part procurement.
- Lead resolution of supplier component concerns; drive APQP, supplier validation audits, supplier selection, PPAP, customer interaction, VA/VE support, component development/approval, and supplier cost improvements.
- Coach and train Supplier Development team members; set audit calendars and align on development and improvement activities.
- Partner with Design and Manufacturing Engineering to define process criteria and confirm supplier process capability meets product and process requirements.
- Review engineering/manufacturing specifications to identify materials for assembly across manufactured goods.
- Conduct supplier quality control audits to maintain compliance with company and federal manufacturing and production standards.
- Communicate routinely with vendors to resolve issues and foster continuous improvement.
- Maintain the Supplier Portal; capture key criteria and issue supplier scorecards.
- Adhere to federal and state regulations, as well as all company policies, processes, and procedures.
- Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned; maintain predictable and reliable attendance.
What you bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering.
- 5+ years managing a certified quality management system (e.g., TS 16949, ISO).
- 4+ years leading continuous quality improvement in a manufacturing setting.
- Automotive experience; Battery, Electronics, or Powertrain manufacturing preferred.
- Strong mechanical or electrical aptitude and understanding.
- Experience working with large OEM customers and their requirements.
- Customer quality assurance background and prior audit experience.
