About our opportunity

We invite you to apply to join our team as a full-time (40 hours per week), non-exempt Transportation Inspector. The purpose of this position is to inspect roadway construction projects, provide quality control and quality assurance inspections in compliance with established construction standards, municipal, County and state ordinances/regulations.

Projected Hiring Range/Pay Grade 115: $24.55 – $29.46 per hour. Salary is dependent on qualifications.

Location: Road Maintenance, York, SC

Work Schedule: 8 am to 5 pm Monday thru Friday, may have to work occasional overtime to meet demands.

Finalist must be able to complete the following pre-employment screenings: background check, drug screen, and driving Record (MVR) check.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct field inspections of road construction, drainage systems, utility and conduit installation and sidewalks within York County’s deeded right of ways.
Conducts preliminary and final warranty inspections of all newly developed roadways. Inspects shoulder and slope stabilization, sidewalk/curb/gutter, and other concrete components.
Ensures that all newly constructed roadways are designed and set within the road right of way.
Ensures all driveway accesses are constructed in accordance with York County’s land development manual.
Processes and records all encroachment permit applications with the Natural gas, communication, fiber internet, water/sewer companies to assure all work is performed within established standards. Works with developers, builders and citizens as needed for any encroachments within York County’s Road right of ways.
Evaluates existing conditions and problems and/or inspects construction of all drainageways or drainage systems and features inside road right-of-way, including erosion control inspections, silt fence, and rip rap.
Inspects work zones to ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations and protocols.
Inspects the placement of sodding, seeding, and vegetation stabilization.
Interprets, explains, and enforces compliance with applicable local and state codes, ordinances, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures as well as approved construction contracts, plans, and specifications; notifies proper person(s) of violations and of necessary corrective measures; recommends solutions to problems and provides necessary follow-up to verify compliance; issues stop work orders for non-compliance as required.
Performs related work as assigned.

About you

Experience and Education:

High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
Four (4) years of road maintenance or transportation inspection experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Special Licenses and Certifications:
Valid state driver’s license is required.
Roadway Inspection Certification from the S.C. Department of Transportation required or the ability to obtain.
S.C. Earthwork and Base Course Certification, Certified Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control Inspector (CEPSCI) from South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control preferred.
Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.
