Position Summary
Dura-Bond is seeking a Certified Weld Inspector / Quality Manager to oversee weld quality and coating quality assurance across our structural fabrication and pipe coating operations. This role is responsible for ensuring that all fabricated structures and coated products meet applicable codes, customer specifications, and internal quality standards — from raw material intake through final inspection and shipment.
Key Responsibilities
Weld Quality & Fabrication Inspection
- Perform and oversee visual and dimensional weld inspection across bridge, piling, waler, sound wall, retaining wall, railing, walkway/ramp, and cofferdam fabrication
- Ensure compliance with applicable welding codes (e.g., AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code, AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code) and project-specific specifications
- Coordinate and review non-destructive testing (UT, MT, PT, RT) performed by internal or third-party NDT technicians
- Review and approve Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR); verify welder qualifications and continuity
- Identify, document, and drive resolution of weld defects and nonconformances
Coating Quality Inspection
- Inspect and verify coating application quality, internal linings, and protective paint/coating systems (coal tar epoxy, zinc/epoxy/urethane)
- Monitor surface preparation (abrasive blasting profile, cleanliness) prior to coating application
- Verify dry film thickness, holiday testing, adhesion testing, and cure schedules against customer and industry specifications
- Maintain coating inspection documentation and traceability records
Quality Management
- Maintain and continuously improve the site quality management system, including inspection & test plans (ITPs), nonconformance reports (NCRs), and corrective/preventive action (CAPA) processes
- Review incoming material certifications (mill certs, coating material certs) for conformance
- Serve as primary point of contact for customer, third-party, and regulatory inspectors (e.g., state DOT inspectors on bridge work)
- Prepare and maintain quality documentation packages for customer submittal and project closeout
- Train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to QC inspectors and fabrication personnel
- Support root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives across fabrication and coating lines
Qualifications
Required
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification
- 5+ years of experience in structural steel fabrication and/or steel coating quality control
- Strong working knowledge of AWS D1.1 and/or D1.5 welding codes
- Ability to read and interpret welding symbols, blueprints, and fabrication drawings
- Experience with NDT methods and interpretation of results
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable interfacing with customers and third-party inspectors
Preferred
- NACE/AMPP Coating Inspector certification (Level 1 or 2)
- Experience with API 5L, ASME, or AISC specifications
- Familiarity with liquid coating systems (epoxy, zinc, urethane)
- Prior experience in a Quality Manager or Quality Engineer role within a fabrication or coating environment
- Experience with bridge or DOT-inspected structural steel projects
Pay: $33.00 – $37.00 per hour
