Provo City is hiring an Industrial Pretreatment Inspector (FOG) to perform technical work in the industrial pretreatment waste inspection division of the Public Works Department. This work involves monitoring food service establishments and other commercial entities for code compliance. Qualified, civic-minded individuals are encouraged to apply.

What is the compensation package?
Pay Rate: (G30) $30.20 – $41.63 per hour (depending on experience)

What are the main duties? (For the full classification specification,
Locate, identify, inspect, and monitor food service establishments (FSEs) for compliance with applicable regulations and permit requirements.
Inspect commercial users for compliance with applicable regulations, proper grease interceptors/traps operation, oil and water separators.
Compile evidence for illicit discharges and verify maintenance conducted per permit requirements.
Manage assets using asset management software.
Search Provo utilities/GIS/CityView databases.
Answer customer calls/inquiries.
Educate customers on ordinance and permit requirements.
Prepare and transmit code violation correspondence.
Research internal and external document requests.
Canvas City sanitary sewer system for new and existing industrial users, commercial users, privately owned collection, and transmission systems for permitting program inclusion.
Review permit applications and prepare proper documentation.
Initiate and implement enforcement actions for users in non-compliance with applicable state and local regulations.
Maintain database of inspections, findings, and reports.
Assist in completing industrial waste survey.
Assist with enforcement activities including inspections, sampling, field monitoring, documentation, program reviews, and testifying.
Perform special assignments, such as sewer flow measuring and new regulation review.
Conduct chemical sampling and analyses.
Perform routine cleaning and decontamination/disinfection of equipment and facility.
Assist in responding to citizen inquiries/complaints about water quality and other environmental concerns.
Perform other related duties as required.
What are the minimum requirements?
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
Two years of experience in wastewater systems or wastewater treatment.
OR an equivalent combination of job-related education and experience.
A valid, lawful Driver license.
Must obtain Utah Grade I Wastewater Treatment Operator or Wastewater Collection System Operator I certificate within two testing periods after hire.
Must obtain Utah Flagger Certification within 6 months after hire.
What is the selection process?
Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted, with the first screening being held on April 30, 2025. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications listed above to be eligible for consideration.
If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
