About the Role

Specialised Maintenance Products (SMP), a leading manufacturer of industrial chemical cleaning and hygiene solutions, is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician / Quality Controller to join our team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the Technical Manager with laboratory testing, quality control, product development, chemical formulation support, production quality assurance, and ensuring that all products consistently meet company and customer quality standards.

This role is ideal for an individual who is passionate about laboratory work, quality assurance, continuous improvement, and working within a manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct quality control testing on raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished products.
  • Perform physical, chemical, and visual product inspections.
  • Prepare laboratory samples and assist with chemical formulations.
  • Support product development, formulation trials, and stability testing.
  • Monitor production quality and verify batch compliance.
  • Identify, investigate, and report non-conforming products.
  • Assist with customer complaint investigations and corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, test reports, and quality documentation.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment is cleaned, maintained, and calibrated.
  • Monitor laboratory chemical and consumable stock levels.
  • Verify incoming raw materials meet required specifications.
  • Ensure compliance with company quality standards, ISO requirements (where applicable), and Health & Safety legislation.
  • Maintain excellent housekeeping and laboratory organisation.
  • Assist with continuous improvement initiatives within the laboratory and production departments.
  • Perform any other reasonable duties assigned by the Technical Manager.

Minimum Requirements

  • National Diploma or Degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Quality Management, or a related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 2–5 years' experience in a chemical manufacturing or industrial laboratory environment.
  • Experience in laboratory testing and quality control.
  • Knowledge of chemical handling procedures and laboratory safety.
  • Experience with product testing and quality documentation.
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Valid driver's licence (advantageous).

Preferred Experience

  • Chemical formulation experience.
  • Manufacturing quality control.
  • Batch testing and product release procedures.
  • Root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems.
  • GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice).
  • CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Actions).
  • Laboratory equipment calibration.
  • Industrial cleaning chemicals or hygiene products (advantageous).
