JOB SUMMARY
The Laboratory Technician will be located in our NPD lab in Winston-Salem, NC. This position is responsible for the inspection, assessment, verification/testing, and documentation of process and product quality on flexible packaging development projects. Included in these duties are instrument care, calibration, documentation, and support to the NPD and Quality teams.

SHIFT HOURS: 2:45PM – 11:00PM

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepares routine reports – including gathering and summarizing data.
Assist with test development
Ensure lab equipment calibrations are current, perform calibrations, and maintain calibration records
Test raw materials, in-process materials, and finished product
Assist development/quality engineers with pilot /production equipment trial coverage, perform lab testing, report, and document results
Participate in internal as well as external teams
Interface with external suppliers and customers through meetings, laboratory tours, and site visits
Prepare customer/sales samples and pack for shipment
Log sample rolls and maintain NPD sample room
Assist and provide recommendations for statistical data analysis
Inspects and tests materials, products and packages in support of new technology development and for manufacturing plant/customer support/quality
Follows and participates in lab safe housekeeping guidelines designed to ensure a safe work environment.
Performs other duties that may be assigned based on business requirements

Experience and Education Requirements
Minimum of 2 (two) years directly related laboratory and/or plastic packaging development experience or Associates/Technical Degree.

Minimum Skills, Knowledge and Ability Requirements

Ability to input and retrieve information on a computer.
Capable of compiling test results and presenting findings in spreadsheet (Excel) or presentation format (PowerPoint)
Basic understanding of equipment, instruments and processes.
Follow documented work instructions (WI’s) and test procedures (PTM, ASTM, and Tappi) relevant to position
Fundamental understanding of packaging material properties and how they’re utilized in the industry
Proficient operating advanced laboratory equipment (DSC, GC, FTIR, Goniometer, Lippke 5000 burst tester)
Good communication and interpersonal skills using tact and diplomacy.
Ability to work well in a team environment as well as independently
Capable of coordinating and prioritizing multiple work assignments/projects
Strong attention to detail.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees, customers, and the general public.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Thermal and solvent based process equipment environment, lifting and process noise
