QUALITY INSPECTOR POSITION SNAPSHOT
The Quality Inspector III / CMM Programmer is responsible for performing advanced inspection activities and developing, running, and maintaining CMM programs used to verify precision machined components, assemblies, and related materials. This position inspects and evaluates raw materials, in-process products, finished parts, and first articles to ensure compliance with engineering drawings, customer requirements, GD&T, internal standards, and applicable quality system requirements. The role requires advanced inspection expertise, strong CMM programming capability, sound judgment, accurate documentation, and the ability to collaborate with production, engineering, and quality personnel to resolve quality and dimensional concerns.
WHAT QUALITY INSPECTORS WILL BE DOING
- Conduct inspections of raw materials, in-process products, finished goods, components, assemblies, and related materials to ensure compliance with quality standards, engineering drawings, customer specifications, and internal requirements.
- Develop, write, modify, validate, and maintain CMM programs based on engineering drawings, blueprints, CAD models, 3D models, and customer specifications.
- Program and operate CMM equipment using software to inspect complex precision machined parts and assemblies.
- Perform first article, first piece buyoff, in-process, and final inspections using CMM equipment, vision systems, handheld measurement equipment, gauges, and manual inspection methods.
- Perform dimensional, visual, and functional inspections and verify part dimensions, tolerances, surface profiles, and key characteristics in accordance with GD&T and applicable requirements.
- Efficiently and effectively perform manual measurements on granite rock using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, indicators, and other inspection tools.
- Complete First Piece Buyoff and In-Process Inspection reports by utilizing precision handheld measurement equipment, gauges, CMM data, and applicable documentation.
- Compile First Article Inspection Reports (FAIR) and generate inspection documentation required by customers, audits, internal procedures, or quality system requirements.
- Record, report, and communicate inspection results, test data, and non-conformances to production, engineering, quality engineering, and management as appropriate.
- Record and disposition non-conformances in the applicable database and assist with containment, root cause analysis, corrective action, and follow-up activities as needed.
- Maintain clear records of CMM programs, inspection results, inspection reports, and related quality documentation for traceability and future reference.
- Set up and utilize CMM equipment and vision systems to inspect customer or internal product and support production and new product introduction requirements.
- Work closely with production, engineering, quality, and NPI teams to develop inspection plans, resolve dimensional or quality issues, and improve manufacturability and product quality.
- Assist the Quality Supervisor in responding to customer requests and inquiries related to product quality, inspection results, and technical quality documentation.
- Assist QMS activities, including internal audits, procedure reviews, work instruction feedback, and verification of compliance with SLPs, WIs, and internal processes.
- Assist the Quality Supervisor in reviewing, writing, updating, and publishing procedures and work instructions related to inspection, CMM programming, and quality processes.
- Provide guidance, technical support, and on-the-job training for lower-level Inspectors or other employees performing inspection-related tasks.
- Ensure CMM and other measuring equipment are calibrated, properly maintained, and functioning accurately; perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of CMM equipment as necessary.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives that reduce defects, improve inspection efficiency, strengthen documentation, and enhance overall product quality.
- Stay current on applicable industry standards, CMM programming methods, metrology practices, quality procedures, and inspection technologies relevant to the role.
- Follow all safety requirements.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Schedule:
- Day shift, Monday – Thursday 10 hr shifts or Monday – Thursday 9 hrs + Friday 4 hours
- Occasional overtime as needed.
QUALITY INSPECTOR MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent. Technical training or certification in CMM programming, metrology, quality control, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience serving as a quality control inspector in a manufacturing environment.
- Minimum 2 to 3 years of experience developing, modifying, and running CMM programs in a manufacturing environment, preferably in CNC machining, aerospace, automotive, or other precision manufacturing industries.
- Proficiency with CMM programming software such as PC-DMIS, Calypso, or equivalent.
- High degree of understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and its application in precision machining and inspection.
- Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and CAD models.
- Demonstrated proficiency in taking manual measurements on granite rock.
- High proficiency using precision measuring instruments and tools, including calipers, micrometers, gauges, height gauges, and related inspection equipment.
- Demonstrated skill identifying, measuring, and managing product key characteristics.
- Strong knowledge of quality control processes, procedures, best practices, and inspection documentation requirements.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Knowledge of quality management systems and ISO 9001 or AS9100 requirements is a plus.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills to resolve dimensional and quality-related issues.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in inspection activities, documentation, and communication.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and make decisions independently within assigned responsibilities.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to build relationships with a variety of positions within the company. Tactfulness, professionalism, a team orientation and diplomacy with a problem solving approach are essential.
- Ability to lift up to 5 lbs frequently.
- Ability to work overtime as needed.
- This position involves access to export controlled information. Employees must be eligible to work in roles subject to U.S. export control regulations.
