JOB SUMMARY:
Collects and performs lab tests on blood and body fluids to help physicians/providers diagnose and treat ailments and diseases. Maintain collection areas and equipment, properly identify patients, and correctly use phlebotomy methods. Perform record keeping duties to include clerical, computer data entry, phone calls, memos, and specimen processing functions. Aid/assist all lab techs with various tasks as applicable to lab duties. Employee should establish and maintain professional relationships with their patients.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Adheres to all CDC recommendations and OSHA requirements
Know lab safety rules
Master communication skills with people of all ages
Regular attendance and punctuality for scheduled shifts
Arrange daily activities based on urgency of requests for ordered samples/tests
Identify patients and their personal information using their ID, documents or other means
Obtain blood and other specimens as ordered by a licensed health care provider
Correctly label the specimen collection tubes with patient’s name, DOB, time of collection, source, collector’s initials, etc.
Preserve, distribute, and/or dispose of specimens according to lab guidelines
Properly dispose of contaminated needles and sharps
Performs clinical testing on potentially biohazardous specimens
Follows lab protocol for abnormal results
Processes samples sent to reference labs
Records results and work performed, gives verbal and written reports, files lab slips, fax reports, perform data entry, track patient reports, and other clerical duties as assigned
Answer phones and direct calls to appropriate clinical personnel and lab techs
Maintain and stock inventory supplies
Performs daily preventative maintenance on equipment
Performs quality control procedures and records results
Performs some troubleshooting on equipment malfunctions with assistance from higher positioned lab techs.
Performs miscellaneous duties and projects as assigned by the supervisor to fulfill departmental objectives
Must demonstrate the ability to complete tests and tasks in an accurate and efficient manner
LPNs may draw labs from a patient’s central/venous access line when necessary
LPNs may start IVs when asked to assist in such action
JOB SPECIFICATION:
Education/Training:
High School Diploma or GED with some level of college courses
Or
Completion of a phlebotomy program at a vocational institution with 1 year of clinical laboratory testing/training.
Or
A certification such as Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Medical Assistant license.
Skills: Maintains a high degree of credibility, independence, integrity, confidentiality and trust.
Physical Effort: Work requires frequent sitting and typing. Work requires walking, stooping/bending, climbing, lifting up to 25 lbs.
Understand that, due to their occupational exposure to blood and other potential infectious material, they are at risk of contracting HIV, Hepatitis, and other illnesses.
Works under the supervision of the Lab Tech II, Lab Tech III (MLT), Lab Tech IV (MLS/MT), and the Lab Manager
Employee functions as a team player, attendance is dependable and respectful of coworkers, works toward professional goals, and contributes to a professional working environment within the department
