Under the direction of the Medical Technologist, the Lab Technical Assistant is responsible for performing preparatory portions of laboratory tests within scope of practice under Tennessee Medical Laboratory Act. Procedures are performed in the assigned Laboratory areas, such as Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, or Microbiology. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

A Brief Overview
Under the direction of the Medical Technologist, the Lab Technical Assistant is responsible for performing preparatory portions of laboratory tests within scope of practice under Tennessee Medical Laboratory Act. Procedures are performed in the assigned Laboratory areas, such as Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, or Microbiology. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.
What you will do
Performs pre analytical and post analytical portions of laboratory tests within scope of practice under Tennessee Medical Laboratory Act.
Performs clerical duties as required.
Maintains inventory and stocking of supplies and equipment in the laboratory areas according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
Follows established procedures for laboratory quality assurance, ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards, safety, competency, and policies and procedures.
Education/Formal Training Requirements
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Technical Degree or Diploma Phlebotomy
Currently enrolled in a college program Medical Technology
Work Experience Requirements
1-3 years Laboratory
No prior work experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong knowledge of specimen requirements and medical terminology.
Knowledge related to standard laboratory methods, practices, procedures, policies, regulations, and laboratory materials and equipment.
Knowledge in laboratory quality assurance procedures.
Demonstrates effective teamwork.
Strong attention to detail skills.
Proficient in basic computer skills.
Demonstrates quality customer service skills.
Ability to effectively communicate verbally with Associates, physicians and other outside professionals.
Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of own and others’ work flow.
Supervision Provided by this Position
There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this job.
Physical Demands
Invasive and non-invasive patient contact throughout the shift.
Exposure to patient body fluids.
Must be able to react quickly in emergency situations.
Must be able to read, write, and communicate both orally and written to other individuals.
Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 25 lbs. periodically throughout the shift.
Must be able to stand, walk, climb stairs, sit in one place, squat and kneel periodically throughout shift.
Must be able to reach, bend, and twist periodically throughout shift.
Must have good balance and coordination.
Use of hands for gripping and squeezing, as well as repetitive hand to wrist motion.
Must have good hand-eye coordination.
Normal eye-motor coordination, manual dexterity and visual perception.

Currently enrolled in a college program: Medical Technology, High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required), Technical Degree or Diploma: Phlebotomy
