JOB SUMMARY
The Quality Lab Technician is responsible for performing routine testing in the quality laboratory to ensure product integrity and quality standards of every batch. A key aspect of this role involves active participation in the sensory program, including running sensory panels multiple times per week, to evaluate product attributes. The Lab Technician supports the quality laboratory with sample workflow, from pulling samples to performing microbiological, analytical, and sensory tests to achieve results in a timely fashion.
The wage for this position will range from $25-26/hr. It will be eligible for our full benefit package (Medical, Dental, 401k, PTO, etc)
This position will be dedicated to our Brooklyn Center location, but will move between our breweries in Minneapolis and Brooklyn Center
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Ensure daily collection of aseptic, environmental, and analytical samples from various points in production process according to the sample schedule provided by the Quality Lab Specialist or QAQC Manager.
Work with production teams to communicate production schedule changes that affect lab sample schedules
Perform routine testing on laboratory samples including and not limited to:
Membrane filtration, and enrichment of all sterile samples
ABV, IBU, and SRM sample prep and analysis
HPLC Analysis
Daily Calibrations of analytical equipment
Weekly PCR testing
Prepare all materials that are required for laboratory testing. This includes and is not limited to: microbiological media, sterilized sample jars, and analytical reagents and standards.
Record and document all laboratory QA calibrations and results in respective logbooks and maintain accurate databases for laboratory results as directed by the QAQC Manager.
Actively lead and participate in the sensory program, which includes organizing and running sensory panels several times a week. This involves preparing samples, guiding panel discussions, and accurately recording sensory evaluations.
Actively support the sensory program by attending training, participating in daily panels, and analyze brite tank releases and diacetyl tests.
Continuously work to improve efficiency and organization of testing processes, and updating SOPs as needed.
Communicate all quality test results to the QA/QC Manager that are out of specification and risk the integrity of the beer.
Support the QA/QC Manager with tasks and projects as directed.
Communicate laboratory results interdepartmentally in the absence of the QAQC Manager.
Maintain inventory of all laboratory supplies and basic housekeeping.
Continuously train and work with the QAQC Manager to uphold all quality measures taken in the production space.
Maintain a strong level of expertise in the beer industry and accompanying research.
Adhere to the Surly Code of Conduct at all times
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES
Working knowledge of the beer production process and how it relates to quality critical control points
Laboratory skills including and not limited to: pipetting, aseptic technique, precise weighing, and trouble shooting instrumentation
Knowledge of MS Office Suite and Office365 cloud software management
Strong interpersonal communication skills
Ability to solve problems via root cause analysis
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent (Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science, Medical Science are preferred).
2 years of previous experience as a lab technician
A passion for brewing great beer/ beverages.
WORKING CONDITIONS

This position operates ‘mostly’ around a traditional schedule in a laboratory/office environment, but can require early, late, or weekend work when the demand calls for it. Some work is done in humid, wet, and loud environments.
